Meet an Engineer Innovating for the Future of Energy & Industry
“I have the opportunity to collaborate with diverse teams located around the globe, which is one of the most exciting aspects of my role.”
Malaika Matumbu is a chemical design engineer in our Energy and Sustainability Solutions business, is part of a team that develops innovative solutions for industrial operations.
Based in Rosemont, Illinois, Malaika’s work plays a crucial role in designing processes for refineries, petrochemical facilities and gas processing plants.
Follow along as Malaika shares her career story and advice for aspiring engineers.
What technologies do you develop or design in your role?
“I contribute to the design of processes related to refineries, petrochemical facilities and gas processing plants. I actively collaborate with various teams to develop process simulations, heat and material balances and specifications to size/specify large-scale plant equipment including reactors, vessels, columns, fired heaters, pumps, compressors, heat exchangers and other equipment. By working together with different teams, we ensure that our designs provide innovative solutions that meet industry standards.”
What inspired you to pursue engineering?
“Growing up in the small industrial town of Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, I was surrounded by engineers; my father was a mechanical and electrical engineer. I couldn't help but be inspired by their passion, breadth of knowledge, and dedication to their work. They weren’t just skilled professionals; they were also lifelong learners who firmly believed that every problem had a solution. This mindset made me realize that engineers really could tackle just about any challenge thrown their way.
One of the most significant issues facing many communities today is energy supply, a challenge that impacts countless lives. This reality sparked a genuine desire in me to contribute to meaningful solutions. Through my experiences with engineers, I became increasingly convinced that pursuing an engineering degree would equip me with the skills and tools needed to address real-world challenges effectively.”
What's the coolest thing you get to do in your role?
“I have the opportunity to collaborate with diverse teams located around the globe, which is one of the most exciting aspects of my role. The revamp projects I have worked on are particularly impressive; it is inspiring to redesign units that were originally built many years ago, either to keep them operational or to expand their functionality. Reviewing previous documentation provides me with valuable insights into the thought processes of earlier designers.
Building upon their foundational work and contributing to its evolution is incredibly fulfilling. I find great value in this continuity of effort, as it fosters a sense of teamwork and shared purpose, even when we may not meet in person.”
What’s your advice for aspiring engineers?
“Stay curious and keep learning. The engineering field is constantly evolving, fueled by new technologies and innovations. Seize every opportunity to expand your knowledge, whether it’s through formal education, internships, or engaging in self-directed projects – each experience holds the potential to teach you something valuable.
Don't hesitate to reach out for mentorship from experienced professionals in your area of interest. Building strong relationships with mentors can provide you with essential insights and guidance as you navigate your career path.
Finally, embrace collaboration and teamwork. Many engineering projects depend on a diverse array of skills and perspectives, so honing your ability to work effectively with others will deepen your capacity to innovate and address complex challenges head-on.”
