    Get Inspired: Students Envision the Future of Gameday with Stadium Technology Ideas

    High school sophomores in our headquarters city, Charlotte, used STEM education principles to dream up how they’d make stadiums more innovative and connected

    When you think of American football games, the first images that come to mind are tailgating parties, sizzling grills, bright stadium lights and the roar of crowds. But what often goes unnoticed is how these thrilling events can also be a platform for technological innovation. 

    For example, building automation solutions are at work behind-the-scenes, helping stadiums operate. From ticketing and queue management to safety and environmental controls, building technologies help arena operators manage costs while supporting operational efficiency and environmental goals, delivering next-level stadium experiences for everyone.

    To imagine the new ways in which technology can continue to enhance stadium experiences, Honeywell, the Carolina Youth Coalition and the Carolina Panthers, part of the National Football League, hosted the Futureshaper Innovation Challenge, which called on students to present their creative ideas.

    From AI-powered waste management systems to rainwater harvesting for clean energy, students’ projects were set to revolutionize the gameday experience and pave the way for a more sustainable future. 

    With the guidance of Honeywell mentors and the support of their community, these young innovators dreamt of a better future – and then built it.

    Explore some of the winning ideas from Carolina Youth Coalition sophomores, a diverse group of students from across the Charlotte area.

    1st Place: AI-Powered Waste Management System 
    The innovators behind this AI-powered waste management system designed it to optimize sorting and disposal processes at the Panthers’ stadium. By utilizing advanced sensors and image recognition technology, this system can accurately sort waste into recycling, compost, and landfill categories with over 95% accuracy. This project not only champions reducing contamination and boosting recycling rates, but also makes it an effective solution for sustainable waste management.

    2nd Place: Gameday Compass 
    The creators of the Gameday Compass app developed a solution that offers real-time navigation and eco-friendly options to enhance the game day experience. The app is designed to minimize traffic and reduces carbon emissions through carpool incentives, while also streamlining navigation for parking, concessions and restrooms. The students' innovative approach to AI-powered chatbots provides seamless customer support and automation helps reduce staffing needs for parking and concessions.

    3rd Place: Hydro-Harvester 
    The developers of the Hydro-Harvester project created a sustainable solution that captures and converts rainwater into clean energy. By collecting rainwater from the roof and other surfaces of the stadium, storing it in tanks, and using turbines or water wheels to generate electricity, the system powers low-energy operations such as LED lights, security systems, and scoreboards. This initiative not only reduces energy costs but also minimizes environmental impact, providing a model for businesses seeking energy independence and sustainable operations.
