Brno, September 21, 2009 – Honeywell (NYSE:HON) today announced that
its Czech Republic National Executive and Head of Honeywell Prague Laboratory,
Jaroslav Dolezal, received an honorary doctorate degree from the Brno
University of Technology (BUT). Dolezal was recognized for his work in building
research and development partnerships between engineering companies and the
country’s universities.
“Jaroslav did a terrific job in establishing and expanding a world-class
research and development center for Honeywell in the Czech Republic. His
efforts in creating a successful partnership between Honeywell and area
universities resulted in key research and development projects such as
developing an advanced aircraft crack and corrosion monitoring system. I
congratulate him on his efforts and this tremendous recognition," said
Honeywell’s Chairman and CEO Dave Cote.
Dolezal graduated with distinction from Czech Technical University (CTU) in
Prague in 1970 with a degree in electrical engineering. He received his
doctorate in technical cybernetics from Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences -
Institute of Information Theory & Automation in 1974. His research involved
mathematical modeling, control theory and decision making.
His studies and research have taken him to the Mathematical Institute, Moscow
(1973), the Stefan Banach Center, Poland (1973-74), Oregon State University
(1980-81) and the Imperial College London (1985). He has also received awards
from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
In the 1990s Dolezal represented Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in the
International Federation for Information Processing, where he received the
Silver Core medal for his work. In 1993, Dolezal started work on a joint
research laboratory with Honeywell and the CTU electrical engineering faculty
which eventually led to Honeywell’s design center in Brno.
Dolezal is a vice-chair of the R&D council of the Czech government and a
member of the Engineering Academy of the Czech Republic. He also serves on the
Scientific Board, Brno University of Technology, and Board of Trustees of the
CTU of Prague, and the Board of Directors of the American Chamber of Commerce
in the Czech Republic.
Honeywell funds undergraduate research in the Czech Republic in fields such as
avionics, aerospace modeling, simulation, diagnostics and control systems. The
company promotes scientific research scholarships and access to its research
facilities for talented technical graduates and undergraduates.
In addition, Honeywell’s Nobel-Initiative brings former Nobel Prize winning
scientists to the Czech universities to present their work and inspire future
scientists. In 2009, Professor Theodor W. Hänsch, the 2005 Nobel Laureate in
Physics, visited the CTU in Prague.
The Honeywell-Nobel Laureate Lecture Series is part of Honeywell's Science
Education Initiative, an effort designed to inspire the next generation of
engineers and scientists beginning with students and teachers at middle schools
and extending to targeted universities around the world.
